The new Rappertshofen neighbourhood in Reutlingen expands the garden city of Orschel-Hagen with an inclusive and sustainable concept. Two main axes – the "Green lung" and the “Activity axis” – connect the area with its surroundings, creating green, accessible pathways.

The district promotes diversity with multi-generational housing, inclusive living, and cooperative housing models. The east wing of the existing care home will be modernised, featuring a neighbourhood can-teen, a bicycle workshop, and integrative housing projects. Community spaces, such as the neighbour-hood square and a multi-generational playground, foster social interaction and a sense of community.

The mobility concept keeps motorised traffic out of the neighbourhood core, focusing instead on modular garages, cycling, and pedestrian pathways. Energy-efficient measures, including district heating, combined heat and power plants, solar panels, and highly insulated buildings, support climate protec-tion. Fresh air corridors and blue-green infrastructure with retention areas and green roofs enhance the microclimate and resilience to climate change.

Construction combines recycled materials, hybrid wood technologies, and energy-efficient design. Existing structures, such as the high-rise building, will be preserved to save embodied energy. Facades made of wood, plaster, and brick create a harmonious urban appearance. The project demonstrates how social inclusion, ecological responsibility, and urban development can be effectively integrated, setting new standards for sustainable urban planning.
