The revitalization of the hospital complex at Martin-Wehnert-Platz transforms this historic site into a vibrant, multifunctional urban hub. The project preserves the heritage buildings while introducing flexible spaces for cultural, educational, and social activities. A central courtyard serves as the heart of the complex, linking the church, studios, coworking spaces, and community facilities, while seamlessly integrating the entire site with publicly accessible green areas.
The design approach emphasizes adaptability and sustainability. Existing structures are carefully restored using ecological materials such as wood and clay blocks. Attic spaces are activated through new windows, and the overall layout allows for a phased implementation of the investment. The church is transformed into a multifunctional venue for workshops and events, while the adjacent café and coworking areas foster interaction among residents, visitors, and local creatives.
The outdoor spaces are designed with both ecology and social engagement in mind. The courtyards feature gardens, orchards, and playgrounds. Permeable pathways, rainwater retention systems, and biodiversity zones enhance the site’s ecological performance. Trees, terraces, and shaded areas create welcoming spaces for gatherings, workshops, and community events throughout the year. Parking areas, bicycle stands, and pedestrian-friendly connections support sustainable mobility.
The phased transformation ensures long-term social and economic resilience. Residents play an active role in planning and management by forming a cooperative responsible for maintaining the revitalized complex. By combining heritage conservation, ecological design, and community involvement, the project creates a cohesive and lively space that strengthens Zittau’s identity and enriches the everyday life of its users.
